  7. Preparing for Severe Weather...

With Hurricane Florence headed for a direct hit on the Carolina coastline at present we can be certain that we will receive a great more amount of rain over the next several days, especially Friday through Monday.  The grounds here are already saturated and as many residents witnessed last Friday into Saturday, the property experienced flooding and erosion not just in several areas, but in areas that never had any major issues before. Staff continues to clear storm drains throughout the site and remove debris as well and will continue into Friday. We do have several reminders listed below:

  • Parkfairfax’s Storm Plan

    • Sandbags are available and Parkfairfax staff will deliver sandbags to your unit.  Please call the office at 703.998.6315 to make such a request.  We currently have a flood watch list of 40 plus units.
    • Residents should remove or secure lawn furniture, flagpoles, hanging plants or other outdoor items that could be blown by high winds and become dangerous projectiles or transportation hazards.
    • Owners/residents with drains in their patios, these are the unit owner’s responsibility to keep clear.  If you suspect a greater issue, please contact the office.  We also note that many patios have borders around them. Please check to see that any drainage openings are not blocked.
    • We expect severe rainfall to exceed the storm water capacity of many areas with some flooding.  Although we have completed over 130 buildings with the new gutter filters, with the amount of rain expected we may still see overflowing rain gutters as their capacity may be exceeded.
    • Residents may need to take measures to prevent water from entering underneath their doors.
    • If you smell gas call Washington Gas at 703-750-1000 or 911.  If you lose electrical power, call Dominion Virginia Power at 888-667-3000.
    • The maintenance staff has been divided into “on call and standby crews”.  However, severe storms may exceed the immediate resources of Parkfarifax and the staff will respond to emergencies on a priority basis.
    • Arrangements have been made with contractors such as a tree removal, landscape, electric, plumbing, and roofing companies to respond immediately after the storm.
